COMPARATIVES

COMPARATIVES - STUDENT'S BOOK PAG. 30
"YOU CAN MAKE COMPARISONS..."

We use comparatives to "compare" two nouns (animals, things, people, etc.).  The form depends on the number of syllables that the adjectives have.

STRUCTURE

NOUN + VERB (IS-ARE) + COMPARATIVE ADJECTIVE + THAN + NOUN

SPELLING - RULES

We add -er to short adjectives (one or two syllables):
largo - long - longer
pequeño - small - smaller
rápido - fast - faster

If the short adjective ends in e, you need to add just -r:
grande - large - larger
extraño - strange - stranger
enorme - huge - huger

If the short adjective ends in a vowel + consonant, you need to double the consonant and add - er:

grande - big - bigger
caliente - hot - hotter
triste - sad - sadder

If the adjective ends in "Y", you need to take out the "Y" and add "ier":

seco - dry - drier
amigable - friendly - friendlier
graciosos - funny - funnier

If the adjective is long, you need to use the word "more":

bonita - beautiful - more beautiful
importante - important - more important
generoso - generous - more generous
